Two scourges that caused long delays to last year’s Daytona 500 -- a wet track and the highly combustible jet fuel used to dry it -- could become non-factors for this season’s Sprint Cup season opener.NASCAR will unveil a new drying system at next month’s Speedweeks that is expected to improve efficiency by 80%, drying Daytona International Speedway in 30 minutes instead of two and a half hours.”That’s the goal, and we’re real close,” chairman Brian France said Tuesday on the Sprint Media Tour. ”We also are going to do it in a much more green carbon emission friendly way. We’re going to be able to dry Martinsville (Speedway, the circuit’s shortest track) in 15 minutes. It’s going to be a spectacular thing, and all auto racing will benefit from this.”NASCAR president Mike Helton said the new system will be a series of pipes attached to the rear of a pickup truck that will use compressed air and heat to remove water, eschewing the jet dryer approach that depended on blowing hot air on the asphalt.”We used to dry tracks off with just a fleet of vehicles going around the racetrack, or dragging tires behind pickup tricks, and then someone came along with the jet dryer that expedited it quite a bit and served its purpose for a long period of time,” Helton said. ”But in today’s world with the expectations of getting the show done, there was a high priority placed by Brian and the rest of us to come up with a way that we could expedite that, and this seems to have quite a bit of validity to it.”NASCAR vice president of operations Steve O’Donnell couldn’t provide a full description of the new system because of pending patents but said it would resemble ”a wave of water coming off the track.” O’Donnell said two dozen new dryers will be used in conjunction with existing equipment at Daytona.Last year’s Daytona 500 was the first in the 53-year history of the event to be delayed by rain and started 30 hours late on Monday night. It was stopped for more than two hours when Juan Pablo Montoya’s Chevrolet collided with a jet dryer under caution, sparking a 20-foot wall of flames.

Mexicali apabulla 12-4 a Guasave y disputa con Yaquis tÃtulo de la Liga Mexicana del PacÃfico
GUASAVE, México Los Aguilas de Mexicali atacaron con seis carreras en la segunda entrada y cuatro más en la quinta en ruta el domingo a una aplastante victoria por 12-4 sobre los Algodoneros de Guasave para ganar el derecho de disputar la <a href={url}>{keyword}</a> Serie Final de la Liga Mexicana del PacÃfico.
La eliminación de Guasave echó a perder la posibilidad de ver una nueva revancha entre los Algodoneros y los Yaquis de Ciudad Obregón, quienes ya se han instalado en la final y han ganado los últimos dos cetros del circuito venciendo a Guasave en ambas ocasiones.
Mark Hamilton puso adelante a Guasave en la primera entrada con un cuadrangular de tres carreras, pero Mexicali reaccionó y terminó aplastando los Algodoneros.
Jorge Guzmán (3) la sacó del parque y empujó tres carreras, Ricky Alvarez apiló tres imparables, incluyendo un cuadrangular, y dos carreras empujadas y Chris Roberson aportó también tres carreras producidas para encabezar la furiosa ofensiva de los ganadores.
Walter Silva, elegido como refue <a href={url}>{keyword}</a> rzo para la postemporada, superó un difÃcil inicio y terminó lanzando siete entradas y dos te <a href={url}>{keyword}</a> rcios de ocho imparables y tres carreras para llevarse la victoria. La derrota fue para Juan Delgadillo (0-1), castigado con cuatro imparables y seis carreras en apenas una entrada y dos tercios de labor.
La Serie Final para definir al equipo campeón comienza el martes. Los vigentes bicampeones Yaquis vistarán en Mexicali a los Aguilas que los dominaron por 6-3 en la temporada regular pero que no saben lo que es ganar un tÃtulo desde 1999.
